LAB 8 - OCTOBER 29, 2005

SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME TODAY FINISHING LAB 7, USING DREAMWEAVER.

For the very end part of this week and part of next week.

SOUND WORK

1.   Record some sounds on your Mac or PC using Sony StudioForge or Audacity (preferred FREE software)

Audacity:  http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/audacity/audacity-win-1.2.3.exe

SoundForge (demo): http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=961

If you cannot download on Macs, please work in groups with classmates who can download and install programs.  You can use my laptop too.

2.  Download an mp3 of your choice (from anywhere!)

3.  Immediately save your sounds and music.

4.  Try "tweaking" the sounds you made or the MP3s using Filters (change speed, reverse, wahwah, etc...)

5.  Try "downsampling" the sounds by saving at lower KHz and in mono.

-  if the original track is 44100Hz, try setting the project rate at 22050Hz (lower right corner).    export the track at the lower rate.

6.  Listen to the original and "downsampled" sounds.  Can you tell a difference in quality?

7.  Look at the file sizes of the original and "downsampled" sounds.

8.  Export your files as .WAV or .MP3 files, name it something you will remember.

            - note Ogg Vorbis is an export format.  It is a free file format (unlike mp3)

                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorbis

9.  Make an HTML document

10.  Link to your sound like you'd link to another Webpage:

            <a href=yoursound.wav>LISTEN TO THIS!</a>

Remember to add the relative path if you save the web-page in a different spot from your sound. Remember using this method, the whole sound file has to load before it is played.

11.  Go here:  http://www.shoutcast.com/download/serve.phtml.  Read about Shoutcast.  Don't install, just assimilate. SHOUTCAST server is a FREE server that you can set up so that you can broadcast streaming audio.

Streaming audio allows you to listen to audio while the file is being loaded.

12.  Please read about PODCASTING here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting

Podcasting is basically blogging in audio.  Good or bad?  You decide.
